Image National Signs

Gas and Fuel Station Signage

A gas station’s signage system does more than display prices — it drives traffic, ensures safety, maintains brand compliance, and guides every customer from the road to the pump. At Image National Signs, we design and manufacture the full spectrum of fuel station signage, built specifically for forecourt environments where visibility, durability, and regulatory compliance are non-negotiable.

Fuel station signage spans multiple categories: LED price displays, canopy and fascia signs, pylon and monument signs, pump toppers, directional markers, safety and regulatory notices, car wash boards, and ADA-compliant signs. Each type serves a defined role — branding, navigation, compliance, or revenue generation — and every piece must work together as a unified system.

Compliance is layered and strict. Operators must simultaneously satisfy NFPA 30A fire codes, NFPA 704 hazard placard standards, EPA environmental requirements, ADA accessibility rules, state price display laws, and local zoning ordinances. A single gap in any layer carries real financial and legal risk.

Image National Signs eliminates that risk. We handle design, fabrication, permitting, installation, and ongoing maintenance entirely in-house. We are brand-approved by Shell, BP, Chevron, ExxonMobil, and other major fuel brands, ensuring every sign meets franchisor visual standards. Our materials — marine-grade aluminum, UV-stable acrylics, powder-coated steel — are engineered to withstand fuel vapors, extreme heat, and constant weather exposure.

Since 1956, fuel retailers nationwide have trusted us for one reason: we deliver compliant, high-visibility signage on time, every time.

What Are Types of Gas and Fuel Station Signage?

Gas and fuel station signage covers every visual communication point on a forecourt, from price displays to safety warnings. Each sign type serves a specific operational, regulatory, or branding purpose.

Digital Signage

Price Display Signs

Fuel price signs show the current per-gallon or per-liter cost for each grade. These signs are often the first thing a driver reads from the road. They come in LED, manual flip-disc, and full-color digital formats. Digital price signs update remotely, reducing labor and display errors. Many stations now integrate price signs with their POS system for real-time synchronization.

Canopy and Fascia Signs

Canopy signs display the brand name and logo on the overhead structure above the pumps. These are typically backlit with fluorescent or LED panels and are visible at night from significant distances. Fascia signs wrap around the canopy edge and reinforce brand identity across all four sides of the station.

Pump Topper and Dispenser Signs

Pump toppers sit directly on or above fuel dispensers. They advertise fuel grades, promotions, car wash services, or loyalty program offers. Dispenser decals and panel inserts communicate fuel grade (Regular, Mid-Grade, Premium, Diesel), payment options, and safety instructions at the point of interaction.

Roadside and Pylon Signs

Pylon signs are freestanding pole-mounted structures placed at street level or elevated above traffic. They display the brand logo, fuel prices, and sometimes convenience store promotions. Monument signs serve the same purpose at a lower height, typically at driveways or high-traffic intersections.

Safety and Regulatory Signs

Safety signage is legally required at all fuel stations. This category includes:

  • No Smoking signs posted at all pumps and fuel storage areas
  • No Cell Phone Use warnings near active dispensers
  • Fire Extinguisher Location markers
  • Emergency Shutoff signs identifying the E-Stop button
  • NFPA hazard placards indicating fuel flammability ratings
  • Spill containment procedure notices posted near dispensers

These signs must comply with local fire codes, OSHA standards, and environmental regulations.

Directional and Wayfinding Signs

Directional signage guides drivers through the forecourt, preventing pump-lane conflicts and improving traffic flow. These include entrance/exit signs, one-way arrows, pump lane numbering, air and water station markers, and parking zone identifiers.

Menu Board and Convenience Store Signs

Menu boards outside or inside the convenience store display food, beverage, and promotional offerings. Digital menu boards allow quick price and product updates without replacing printed material. Window graphics and A-frame signs near the store entrance drive impulse purchases from customers already on the forecourt.

Car Wash Signage

Stations with car wash facilities use a dedicated sign category that includes wash-tier selection boards, conveyor entry instructions, pricing displays, and upsell banners. These signs are typically weatherproof and positioned to be readable from inside a vehicle.

Loyalty and Promotional Signs

Promotional signage includes pump-mounted decals, hanging banners, and LED message boards advertising fuel discount programs, credit card partnerships, and seasonal offers. These signs are high-turnover by design and are produced in formats that allow fast swaps without professional installation.

ADA-Compliant and Accessible Signs

Fuel stations are required to include ADA-compliant signage at accessible pump stations, restrooms, and entryways. These signs use tactile lettering, Braille, and high-contrast color standards. Non-compliance carries legal liability and can result in regulatory penalties.

Each sign type at a gas and fuel station carries a defined role: safety, compliance, navigation, branding, or revenue generation. A well-planned signage system integrates all these types into a coherent, code-compliant, and brand-consistent visual system.

Why Choose Image National Signs for Gas and Fuel Station Signage?

Choosing the right signage partner for your gas station means more than just buying a sign — it means working with a team that understands fuel retail, brand compliance, and roadside visibility standards inside and out. Here is why fuel station operators across the country trust Image National Signs.

Industry-Specific Expertise

We specialize in gas station and fuel retail signage, not general commercial signs. Our team understands the unique requirements of forecourt environments — high-traffic exposure, petroleum brand standards, pricing display regulations, and canopy integration. That expertise shows in every project we deliver.

Full-Service Manufacturing

Image National Signs handles everything in-house — design, fabrication, permitting, installation, and maintenance. You work with one team from concept to completion, eliminating miscommunication between contractors. This keeps your project on schedule and on budget.

Brand Compliance Guaranteed

We work directly with major fuel brands including Shell, BP, Chevron, ExxonMobil, and others to meet their strict visual identity standards. Every sign we produce matches your brand's approved colors, fonts, dimensions, and illumination specs. Your station stays compliant and consistent at every location.

High-Visibility Engineering

Every sign we manufacture is built to be seen — from highway speeds, at night, and in all weather conditions. We use high-output LED modules, reflective materials, and precision-calibrated lighting to ensure maximum readability at distance. Visibility drives fuel sales, and we engineer for it.

Durable, Weather-Resistant Materials

Gas station signs face constant exposure to fuel vapors, extreme heat, heavy rain, and UV radiation. We fabricate using marine-grade aluminum, UV-stable acrylics, and powder-coated steel that resist corrosion and color fade for years. Our signs are built to last without frequent repairs or replacements.

Fast Turnaround Without Compromising Quality

We understand that downtime on a fuel station site costs money. Our streamlined production process and experienced install crews get your signage up quickly without cutting corners on craftsmanship. We meet deadlines because delays hurt your business, not just your schedule.

National Sign Company

Image National Signs operates across the country with trained installation crews and service technicians in every region. Whether you are opening a new station, rebranding an existing location, or replacing damaged signage, we dispatch quickly and work efficiently on-site. One call handles everything, anywhere.

Transparent Pricing and Project Management

We provide clear, itemized quotes with no hidden fees. A dedicated project manager keeps you informed at every stage — from permit approval through final inspection. You always know where your project stands and what it costs.

What Types of Gas and Fuel Station Signs Do We Manufacture?

We design and manufacture a full range of signage solutions built specifically for gas stations and fuel retailers. Every sign is engineered for high visibility, weather resistance, and long-term durability.

LED Channel Letters

LED Channel Letters

LED channel letters deliver bright, consistent illumination day and night. Each lett100.er is individually f21abricated from aluminum and face-lit or halo-lit using energy-efficient LED modules. They make your brand name visible from a distance and hold up against rain, heat, and UV exposure.

Digital Signage

Monument Signs

Monument signs sit at ground level near your station entrance, creating a strong first impression for passing traffic. We build them using materials like brick, aluminum composite, and HDU foam to match your brand identity. They accommodate fuel pricing panels, brand logos, and service listings in one clean structure.

Digital Signage
Pylon Signs

Pylon Signs

Pylon signs rise high above the roofline to maximize visibility from highways and busy roads. A tall, double-sided pylon displays your fuel brand, pricing, and amenities to drivers well before they reach your driveway. They are built on structural steel poles and rated for high wind loads.

Digital Signage

Digital signage gives you real-time control over displayed content from any device. Fuel prices, promotions, and messages update instantly without reprinting or manual changes. LED display panels are daylight-readable, weatherproof, and built for 24/7 outdoor operation.

Directional and wayfinding signage

Directional Signage

Directional signs guide customers efficiently through your forecourt, pump lanes, car wash, and exit routes. Clear arrows, lane markers, and instructional panels reduce confusion and improve traffic flow on your property. We fabricate them in reflective, high-contrast finishes for visibility in low-light conditions.

Custom Signage

Custom Signage

Custom signage covers every unique need your station has — from canopy fascia panels and pump toppers to restroom signs and safety notices. We work from your brand guidelines or build a design from scratch. Every custom piece is manufactured to the same durability and visibility standards as our full product line.

Gas and Fuel Station Signage Requirements

Gas station signage is governed by six regulatory layers simultaneously: federal fire and safety codes, EPA environmental rules, ADA accessibility standards, state consumer protection laws, local zoning ordinances, and franchisor brand standards. Operators must satisfy all six to stay fully compliant.

No Federal Price Signage Law

There is no federal law requiring gas price displays. A patchwork of state and city laws governs price signage instead — covering numeral size, sign height, and display format. States like New York and Maryland mandate price display; Florida and Colorado do not.

State-Level Requirements

State regulations enforce one core rule: advertised prices must match pump prices. Update sequencing is also regulated — when prices fall, update the dispenser first, then the road sign. When prices rise, reverse the order. New Hampshire requires numerals at least 4 inches tall on dispensers or roadside signs. Maryland requires equal-sized numerals showing the per-gallon price including taxes on all dispensing equipment.

Local Zoning Rules

Most municipalities require a sign permit before any permanent signage is installed. Local codes regulate sign height, road setback, total area, font type, numeral size, illumination, and color contrast. In Fairfax County, Virginia, fuel price signs are governed by Section 10-4.1.2 of the County Code. In Glendale, California, pump island signs cannot exceed 4 sq ft per sign or 8 sq ft per island. Stations in historic districts or coastal zones face additional review.

NFPA 30A: Fire Safety Signage

NFPA 30A is the primary fire safety standard for fuel station signage. Every dispenser must display "No Smoking / Stop Motor" in bold block letters at least 1 inch tall. Emergency shutoff signs must be positioned 20–100 feet from the dispenser they serve. At least one fire extinguisher per island is required, with no dispenser more than 75 feet from the nearest unit.
Unattended self-service stations must also post instructions to shut off the engine, discharge static electricity before fueling, keep the nozzle in view during dispensing, and not re-enter the vehicle while fueling.

NFPA 704: Hazard Placards

NFPA 704 diamond-shaped placards rate health, flammability, and instability hazards on a 0–4 scale. These are required on aboveground storage tanks and facility entrances. Exterior placards must be at least 15" × 15" with 6-inch numerals; indoor labels must be 8" × 8" with 3-inch numerals.

EPA, ADA, and Brand Requirements

Stations storing over 1,320 gallons aboveground or 42,000 gallons underground must display SPCC-required signage and mark all tanks with contents and capacity. Non-compliance fines reach $32,500 per day.
ADA requires the International Symbol of Accessibility at least 60 inches above ground, pump controls within 15–48 inches of reach, and tactile Braille signage on restrooms and entrances.
Branded stations must follow franchisor standards covering logo placement, canopy fascia, illumination, and pump topper design.

Maintenance Compliance

Signs must be repaired within 24 hours of failure — sometimes within 8 hours — or operators face fines. Digital price systems integrated with POS platforms enable real-time updates and reduce compliance risk. Consulting a signage professional before installation prevents violations, forced removals, and costly delays.
